Artist's Statement
The illustration-based installation Transfigurement; Animophilia contends with the integration of my subconscious and conscious mind by suspending disintegrated parts that describe a process of transformation. The work is not intended to portray an integrated, resolved person. Using transparent materials that include viewers as they explore illustrations of my bodyin metamorphosis, I expose the membrane of my subconscious to scrutiny. The metamorphosing chimeras present in this work are distortions of the form I inhabit, yet detailed illustrations coax viewers to suspend their disbelief in these neo-beings. The moments when these creatures merge reflect my drive for individuation and the investigation of my personal metamorphosis. To shift back and forth between visible illustrations and the translucent spaces between images is to invite viewers into my chaotic inner dialogue, where reason argues against feeling, integration alternates with disintegration, and the real parallels the fantastic.
About the Artist
Cei Lambert was born in Denver, Colorado before moving to Surrey, U.K. where he spent his very early years. After returning to Colorado, Cei developed an abiding passion for the outdoors and ecology, which led him to pursue education in environmental science and wildlife biology. Over time Cei funneled his love of nature into art and illustration, and he turned his professional focus to the arts even as he continued to study biology as an undergraduate. Cei recieved his M.F.A. from Colorado State University, where he focused on textile arts, illustration, and textile design. His work is home to a rich ecosystem that reflects his careful observation of the natural world as well as his passion for imagining other worlds than ours. Cei is a recent transplant to Boston, Massachusetts, where he is pursuing a career applying his visual sensibility to interesting and dynamic projects.
Cei enjoys yoga and is a certified yoga instructor. He has a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do (which he has also taught) and has studied Jiu-Jitsu, Akido, and Tai Chi. Cei loves to go birdwatching and enjoys listening to audiobooks, watching David Attenborough documentaries, and sipping craft beer in the sunshine while doodling.
